GMO Practices
Manufacturer Communication
Grocery Buyer Elizabeth Hill lets manufacturers and sales reps know that the store does not accept GMO products. The co-op does not stock some varieties, such as cereals, if GMO-free products of that type are difficult to source.
Product Removal Process
If a product is found to contain GMO ingredients it is identified to customers and discounted. This was done with all products from companies whose parent companies contributed financially in 2012 to defeat Prop 37, the California ballot initiative to label GMOs. The store does carry products from manufacturers (mainly local) it is working with to transition from “likely to contain” GMO ingredients to all organic ingredients.
Labeling
Products found to contain suspect ingredients and products from approved suppliers likely to contain GMO ingredients are labeled as such in the store. The co-op is a Non-GMO Project Participating Retailer.
