GMO Practices
Manufacturer Communication
Alfalfa’s aggressively seeks alternative sources for products that are known to, or may, contain GMOs. The store prefers to source USDA organic products. But in cases where organic is unavailable, the store features foods produced from non-GMO seed stock. Alfalfa’s supports and recommends that vendors adhere to the standard adopted by the Non-GMO Project. Producers that have not yet received verification from the non-GMO Project must provide verification of testing showing that product s contain no more than 0.5 percent GMO ingredients. The store communicates its GMO stance to all suppliers with products containing suspect ingredients. More and more of Alfalfa's suppliers are getting Non GMO Project certified.
Product Removal Process
Alfalfa's discontinues most products that do not meet its standard for 0.5 percent or lower GMO content.
Labeling
Alfalfa's carries only a handful of products that may contain GMOs, mainly grocery items that are unique and very popular with customers. They have handmade signs notifying customers these items may contain genetically engineered ingredients. The store also posts GMO product shelf tags. Alfalfa's is a Non-GMO Project Participating Retailer.

Thank you Alfalfas! I went to your store opening in 1983 and again in 2011 and I am so grateful for your presence in our community. And as I searched for grocerery leaders in the country (no surprise) I found you on the very short list! Again, many thanks. Dorothy

it is extremely helpful to get this kind of clear guidance (i.e.: the best place to shop in my community), so that I can support the companies that are working to make a difference! Thank you!

Thank you for your comment Anthea, and you’re welcome! Hearing your action plan so makes my day, and is exactly the type of response OCA hopes our contest will generate!
